Community Update on Rock River Gap
This is not an easy message to write, but we feel it’s important to be open and honest with our members and the community we care deeply about.
The golf course will not be opening for the upcoming season.
For more than 100 years, this course has been part of the fabric of our town. It has been a place for memories, friendships, and traditions passed down through generations. We understand how much it means to so many people, and that is why this decision weighs so heavily on us. Since taking ownership in 2010, we have done our best to keep the course operating despite growing challenges. Like much of the golf industry today, small community courses face rising costs, staffing shortages, and increasing maintenance demands. Unfortunately, the reality is that opening the course under current conditions would cost more than responsibly maintaining it for another season, especially with the difficulty of finding reliable staff and keeping the course in playable shape.
At the same time, the course remains for sale. While we hope any future owner would continue it as a golf course, we understand that we cannot control what a new owner may choose to do. Until that time, our intention is to be good stewards of the land and the course—to care for it, improve the grass, and preserve it as a golf course for as long as it remains in our hands.
This season will be used to focus on improving turf conditions, addressing long-term maintenance issues, and giving the course the time it needs to recover, with the hope of reopening next year if circumstances allow. This is not about walking away, but about making the most responsible decision for the future, rather than opening another season under conditions that are not fair to golfers or sustainable for the course.
We know this news will be disappointing and emotional for many. Please know that every decision we are making is guided by a desire to do what is best for the course and for the community it has served for over a century. We are grateful for the support, understanding, and kindness shown to us over the years, and we do not take that lightly.
We will continue to share updates as plans move forward. Thank you for being part of this place and its long history.
Sincerely,
Rock River Gap
